Plymouth Argyle ended a run of four games without a win in the EFL Championship with an impressive away victory against fellow Vertu Motors-backed side Middlesbrough.

A busy run of games had caught up with Argyle somewhat after three successive league defeats, whilst ‘Boro were on a high having taken an impressive victory against runaway league leaders Leicester City a week earlier.

It was the away side that took an early lead when Morgan Whittaker picked up the ball in the centre circle and released Darko Gyabi down the left hand side – with the on-loan midfielder cutting in and firing a shot towards the far corner.

Although Tom Glover in the 'Boro goal was able to make the save, he could only push the ball into the path of Matthew Sorinola who was able to lash a shot into the net despite Glover’s best efforts to keep the scores level.

Gyabi was again at the heart of the action when Argyle went two goals clear on the half hour, playing a lovely ball through to Ryan Hardie – who burst forwards before slotting his 13th goal of the season beyond Glover.

‘Boro struggled to create any serious chances as Glover was forced to make numerous saves to keep the home side in it, with Conor Hazard only called into action in the Argyle goal in the final ten minutes.

The result leaves ‘Boro in 13th place and eleven points off the play off places, with Argyle two places – and four points – further back.

Argyle are at home to promotion chasing Ipswich this weekend, with ‘Boro facing a trip to the Potteries to face Stoke City.
