Electric Vs Hybrid

Whatís the difference? Electric and hybrid vehicles are still relatively new to our roads, and there are still a few misconceptions about what the differences are between them. Hereís a quick comparison:

Electric Vehicle

An electric car uses an electrical engine that needs to be Ďchargedí before being taken out on the road. The battery is the only source of power these cars need, but thatís not to say theyíre lacking in performance! They do better than many of their petrol / diesel counterparts when it comes to BHP, mileage and tech features.

Hybrid Vehicle

A hybrid car is a great choice if youíre not ready to go fully electric. It combines a battery with a petrol/diesel engine - the battery powers your shorter journeys, and the petrol/diesel kicks in for those longer-distance motorway drives. The car charges itself as you drive, so thereís no need to use charging stationsÖ just drive as you usually would, and save on fuel!

Elctric Vehicle

It drives like an automatic, so there are no gears to worry about Ė just put your foot on the pedal and go! Not only that, but itís much kinder to the environment as youíre emitting 50% fewer greenhouse gasses when compared to traditional vehicles - and ZERO direct emissions.

Hybrid Vehicle

Thereís a choice of manual or automatic transmission, so thatís up to you! But either way, you will definitely notice a much quieter and smoother ride, as the battery takes some of the load Ė meaning your gas engine doesnít need to work as hard. Youíll also notice that your fuel consumption is dramatically reduced

Elctric Vehicle

Electric vehicles have a variety of benefits that could make your everyday life just that little bit easier! Not only are they better for the environment, they are quiet, low maintenance, cheaper to run and very responsive on the road. Sounds ideal!

Hybrid Vehicle

If hybrid vehicles have caught your eye, we arenít surprised! With incentives like lower Road Tax, not to mention the fact they're more economical, lightweight and they reduce carbon emissions! Regenerative braking means your vehicle charges itself as you drive. Perfect!

Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles are ideal if you tend to drive shorter distances, have off road parking to charge your vehicle overnight and want to contribute to reducing your carbon emissions. With the ever-growing number of charging points popping up all over the country, youíll never find yourself short of zap!

Hybrid Vehicle

Because hybrids offer better mileage and have higher range, they're a great option if you tend to do a lot of motorway driving. The performance of a hybrid may not be the speediest but if you are looking to save some money, they are certainly more economical! People who donít have off road parking or easy access to charging points will find hybrids a dream!

FAQs

Are electric cars more expensive?

Initially, electric vehicles (EVs) can be more expensive to buy however running and maintenance costs are significantly lower than that of a petrol or diesel car. In the UK, you could be eligible for a Government grant, up to £3500 (depending on the type of EV you want to buy) and there are savings on fuel costs, tax, congestion charges (where applicable), parking and car maintenance!

What brands of electric vehicles are available?

In line with Government legislation, lots of manufacturers are getting in on the EV scene, including Jaguar, Renault and Volkswagen, with many more makes and models in the pipeline. To see our range of electric vehicles, click here.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?

Like a lot of the aspects of EVs, this is very varied and can take anywhere between 15 minutes and 12 hours, depending on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point you are plugged into. Most EVs are chargeable at home and this can be done overnight, however you do need off-road parking to do this.

How long does the battery last?

This, again, is dependant on several factors including type of battery, charging habits and environment, or more specifically temperature. Lead-acid batteries may not even last a year whereas lithium-ion batteries, the most common battery used in EVs, could last up to 10 years! However if you overcharge or drain the battery too much, or you live in a warmer climate, this could also contribute to degradation.

How far can you go in an electric vehicle?

Range anxiety is definitely a thing and itís understandable people would worry about how far they could go in an EV! Dependant on the car, you could get anywhere between approximately 50 and 300 miles on a single charge, and with more and more charging points popping up all over the UK, there is less and less chance of getting stranded!
