A busy week of fixtures in the Premier League, EFL Cup and EFL Championship resulted in cup progress and plenty of points for the four Vertu Motors partner teams.

Burnley FC had been unfortunate to go down to defeat against Manchester United, but bounced back against the team owned by a number of former Red Devils in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The short trip to Salford ended in a 4-0 success, with Vincent Kompany’s team making it through to the next round with ease despite the manager changing his entire starting eleven.

Sander Berge, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Dara O’Shea all scored in the first half hour before Wilson Odobert added a late fourth to set up a fourth round tie away at Everton in early November.

Returning to league action, the Clarets made the trip over to Newcastle but were beaten 2-0, remaining 19th in the table after a tough run of fixtures to start the campaign.

In the Championship, Sunderland AFC returned to winning ways after defeat to Cardiff with a comfortable success away at promoted Sheffield Wednesday.

The game was over before ten minutes had even been played as a Dan Ballard header and a fine finish from Jack Clarke put the Black Cats 2-0 up, with Clarke adding his second from the penalty spot just after the half hour mark to wrap up a comfortable win - which leaves Sunderland fourth in the table.

Plymouth Argyle FC made the long trip to Hull seeking to build on an impressive win over Norwich, but had to settle for a point following a 1-1 draw – leaving the team still chasing a first win this season away from Home Park.

Adam Randle put Plymouth ahead before Hull equalised just before half time, with the result leaving the Pilgrims comfortably in mid-table.

A productive week for Middlesbrough FC saw Michael Carrick’s team progress to the next round of the EFL Cup with Emmanuel Latte Lath and Morgan Rogers both on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win at Bradford – with the team now facing a visit to Exeter City in the fourth round.

‘Boro then made it two successive league wins in an all-action game at Watford, where an early double from Riley McGree put the team 2-0 up only for the home side to recover to level the scores. Josh Coburn then struck the winner to lift his side out of the bottom three.

A busy week sees each of the Vertu Motors partner teams in action twice, with Burnley hoping to get a first league win against Luton Town – another team to gain promotion last season.
