Weather Denies Yorkshire In Season Opener
Yorkshire’s bid to secure promotion to Division One of the County Championship kicked off with a draw after the rain-affected opening round of fixtures.
Poor weather conditions would impact on all four days of the game to prevent a positive result, with the third day being washed out in its entirety and only one of the four innings in the game being completed.
Yorkshire elected to bowl first and when the action got underway in the opening day, were able to secure the early advantage as they restricted the visitors to 164-5, with George Hill taking three wickets as the White Roses secured an early bowling point.
Day two would again start late due to the weather and the visitors fought back, with a fine knock of 90 from Ben Mike allowing Leicestershire from to recover from being 215-8 at one stage to reach 354.
Fin Bean and Shan Masood both fell in quick succession when Yorkshire headed in to bat and reached the end of the second day trailing by 282 before rain resulted in day three being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
All chance of a positive result had realistically passed even before the start of day four was delayed by more overnight rain and a wet outfield, but Adam Lyth reached 101 before Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten century from just 69 balls to entertain the crowd and take Yorkshire to 264-6 before his side declared.
Leicestershire reached 26-0 in the second innings as Yorkshire improved their over rate before the end of play brought the inevitable draw, with the home side taking twelve points from the game.
Next up is a trip to Bristol to face off with Gloucestershire.
