Rain Denies Yorkshire Despite Impressive Centuries

Yorkshire were forced to settle for a draw against Derbyshire after rain played havoc with the latest County Championship game at Headingley.

Having suffered a first defeat of the season in the previous match against Middlesex, Yorkshire were keen to try and battle for a first win of 2024 and enjoyed a productive opening day having batted first.

After Finlay Bean and Shan Masood were dismissed with the score on less than 100, Joe Root headed to the crease to join Adam Lyth and the pair raced to a partnership of 113 before Lyth was dismissed three short of a century.

That brought Harry Brook in to bat and the England duo put on a quick 71 before the day came to an end with the home side on 276-3.

The attacking approach continued on the second day as the pair put on 201 for the fourth wicket, with Root eventually dismissed for 119 and Brook making 126 not out before Yorkshire declared on 450-5 having picked up five bonus points.

Derbyshire fought back when they headed out to start their reply despite losing three early wickets, with Wayne Madsen and Brooke Guest helping to steer their side from 23-3 through to 190-3 by the end of the day.

It set up an intriguing third day but the weather had other ideas, with play abandoned at lunch without a ball being bowled as a result of rain.

Needing to reach 301 to avoid the follow-on, Derbyshire lost Guest after adding just three more runs but Aneurin Donald stepped up to take his place and played a key role in the innings once Madsen had been dismissed for 104; a fine showing considering he had picked up a hand injury when in the field.

Donald hit ten fours in a 118-ball knock of 97 as Derbyshire ended their innings just three runs behind, with Yorkshire moving to 59-1 by the closer as the game was shared.

A 16 point haul for Yorkshire leaves them fifth in Division 2.
