Late Drama Sees Plymouth Denied Three Points

Plymouth Argyle missed out on an impressive home victory against Coventry after late drama in the latest mid-week fixtures in the EFL Championship.

After an unbeaten start to life under new boss Ian Foster, Argyle went into the fixture on the back of two successive defeats, with an FA Cup exit to Leeds being followed by a loss to fellow Vertu Motors-backed side Sunderland in league action.

Coventry arrived at Home Park riding high towards the play off places and should have taken the lead in the first half when Matt Godden somehow managed to head wide when it appeared easier to score.

Argyle punished the visitors after the break, with Adam Randell sending over a ball from the left hand side for Morgan Whittaker – named as the Championship Player of the Month for January – sweeping home to add to his impressive goal tally.

Coventry came back at the home side however, and when Ellis Simms latched on to a ball from Victor Torp and saw his shot saved by ‘keeper Connor Hazard, it was the forward who reacted quickest to bundle in the equaliser.

The Sky Blues were only level for three minutes however with Plymouth going back in front when Mickel Miller fizzed in a shot from the left which Bobby Thomas only managed to deflect beyond his own ‘keeper.

It looked like the Pilgrims were going to secure all three points until the 96th minute when a free-kick on the left found its way to Liam Kitching, who turned in a dramatic equaliser from close range to steal a point.

Argyle remain 15th in the Championship ahead of home fixtures with Leeds and West Brom in the coming week.
