Fast and economical new Golf GTD on sale soon

Fans of the fast and the frugal will be very happy to hear that the new, MK7 Golf GTD goes on sale this Monday (5th August), and with some headline-grabbing economy and performance statistics, it's likely to attract plenty of interest.

At the heart of the Golf GTD's impressive green, and go-go, performance credentials is a 2-litre, turbocharged common rail diesel engine with 180bhp on tap, and a full 380Nm of torque. The fact that all of this juicy torque is ready to roll from just 1,750rpm on the tacho means that acceleration should be smooth and exciting. Indeed, this diesel-powered delight can sprint to 62mph in just 7.5 seconds, while the top speed is a full-bloodied 142mph.

All of this barn-storming comes at little cost to the economy side of life, with a quoted combined fuel economy of up to 67.3mpg and emissions from just 109g/km of CO2. What's more, with an insurance group rating of 26E (four groups lower than the previous model), the Golf GTD has already proven popular with those insurance company bean-counters.

Priced from £25,285 and packing plenty of racy-looking interior and exterior dress up parts, the new VW Golf GTD looks as good as it goes, too.
