Battling Argyle Slip To Rare Home Defeats

Plymouth Argyle suffered two rare home defeats in the EFL Championship as a hectic run of fixtures continued for the Vertu Motors-backed side.

In-form Leeds United were the first side to visit Home Park and were chasing an eighth successive league win, whilst Argyle were keen to try and climb up the table and maintain the progress seen under new boss Ian Foster.

The away side grabbed the lead after ten minutes of the game when a long ball forward found its way to Willy Gnonto, who took the ball down on the edge of the box and beat his man before slipping the ball beyond Connor Hazard and into the net.

Leeds continued to have the better of the chances through the remainder of the firat half and had a second goal chalked off for off-side, but Plymouth improved after the break – albeit without creating a serious effort on the Leeds goal.

The away side instead doubled its advantage when Georginio Rutter struck the second with 20 minutes to go, whilst Morgan Whittaker had a late effort well saved by Illan Meslier as Argyle looked to try and get back into the game.

Despite ultimately failing to pick up a point, Argyle were able to take the positives from restricting the form side in the league to just two efforts on target.

A matter of days later, West Brom arrived at Home Park but a first half low in quality chances saw the two sides go in level at the break.

In the second half however, the visitors hit the front when Cedric Kipre scored from close range, with Mikey Thomas and Tom Fellows adding to his effort to secure a 3-0 win.

It leaves Argyle sitting 17th in the table ahead of a Vertu Derby with Middlesbrough at the Riverside this weekend.
