It's easy with Motability! You choose the car, we do the rest.

Ten Second Review

Although the logic of an impractically-shaped car with an oh-so sensible engine might escape a few of us, Volkswagen's Scirocco BlueMotion Technology brings a sheen of environmental respectability to what might at first seem a rather hedonistic purchase. It's not quick but it is admirably frugal and fashionably on-message.

Background

Wind the clock back a few years to the first of the vehicles designed specifically to reduce emissions and boost economy and you were confronted with a handful of decidedly uninspiring shopping hatches; the sort of thing you'd imagine only the most insufferable dinner party bore driving. These days things are very different. When Ferrari are fitting a Stop/Start system on their California to help reduce emissions you know that car manufacturers everywhere are cleaning up their acts. Therefore it probably won't come as too much of a surprise to learn that Volkswagen, a company with a considerable track record in developing clean engine technology, has given its purposeful Scirocco a good 'greenover'. Except Volkswagen doesn't do green. Say hello to the Volkswagen Scirocco BlueMotion Technology.

Driving Experience

We've driven the 138bhp diesel Scirocco that this BlueMotion Technology model is based upon and, to be entirely honest, it's not our pick of the bunch. The engine feels a little flat and a tad gruff for a car with such svelte lines but as a basis for building a high efficiency version, it's a winner with great economy and low emissions, more of which later. The BlueMotion Technology model is offered as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and this is the transmission to choose for the lowest emissions but the car comes alive when fitted with Volkswagen's revolutionary DSG twin-clutch gearbox and this transforms the nature of the car. No longer do you have to tediously row through the manual 'box to get the best from the engine. Left in automatic, the DSG gearbox makes all the right choices to plug you into the power band while if you want to take control, there are shift paddles behind the wheel to nip up and down the gearbox at amazing speed. It'll manage the sprint to 60mph in an unspectacular 9 seconds but it's still a fun steer. The adaptive chassis control offering three driver-selected settings - comfort, normal and sport. The system's influence extends to the steering system: should 'sport' be selected, the steering firms up to provide more feel while 'comfort' mode makes the steering lighter and easier to operate at low speeds or around town. The Stop/Start system makes city driving that little bit less stressful.

Design and Build

Unlike many other high-efficiency editions, The Scirocco BlueMotion isn't fitted with gimpy-looking wheel trims, a flat front end or low rolling resistance tyres that offer all the cornering grip of some balding remoulds. In fact, it looks much like any other Scirocco and that counts as a major plus. The proportions of this car are classically short, low and wide although the dimensions betray its reliance on Golf mechanicals. The vehicle measures 4,256mm long, 1,404mm high and 1,810mm wide. Inside the Scirocco, there's a lot to grab the interest. A contoured, flat-bottomed sports steering wheel frames dials that glow white at night. The interior is airy and light, and the option of an electrically-operated panoramic sunroof further emphasises the feeling of spaciousness. There's a reasonably wide boot aperture which opens up 292 litres of luggage space. Fold the split rear seats down and you've got 755 litres. The Scirocco features four, individual sculpted seats finished in a choice of either cloth or leather. The sports seats aren't just restricted to those up front - the contoured rear seats feature integrated headrests to offer plenty of support.

Market and Model

There's a pair of trim level offered in BlueMotion Technology guise - standard and the well-equipped GT specification. The standard version gets Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems to help to create the cleanest and most fuel efficient Scirocco to date. GT trim nets you big alloy wheels, tinted windows, fog lights, a multi-function steering wheel, a trip computer and climate control. This, more than anything, helps define the Scirocco BlueMotion Technology. It isn't a car aimed at those looking to save a bob or two. Instead it's an unashamed indulgence that plays the green (or blue) card to reduce purchase guilt. Does that make it any less of a good buy? That is an incredibly difficult question to answer. Part of me dislikes this nagging feel of cynicism while another part can't help but be impressed that a car this desirable can cost so little to operate on a day to day basis at least.

Cost of Ownership

It's hard to argue with a combined fuel consumption figure of 62.8mpg with emissions rated at just 118g/km. Whichever way you choose to look at it, those are the figures of a tiny citycar rather than a beefy-looking coupe. Should you choose the DSG gearbox, the green credentials slip a degree or two, fuel economy edging back to a still hardly gluttonous 57.6mpg while emissions are rated at 129g/km. I think I'd take the DSG and put up with the marginally more expensive road tax and fuel bills. Residual values have proven extremely strong and the BlueMotion Technology model will have buyers queueing up to take advantage of those minuscule fuel bills and modest tax. Insurance is a very affordable Group 24 too. Once you've got over the upfront price, this Scirocco appears to make sense. That's quite some caveat though, because the asking price isn't insubstantial.
