Ten Second Review

Toyota's RAV4 compact SUV soft roader has been around so long it's easy to forget quite how far it's come. The fourth generation design is bigger, better finished and far more efficient without forgetting that cars in this class need to look good and drive well too. Reacquainting yourself with this model, especially in 2.2 D-4D AWD form, might throw up a few surprises.


Back in the Nineties, the very first Toyota RAV was a kind of hot hatch / SUV with three doors and a size no bigger than a modern supermini. A far cry from the mature, grown-up but dare I say, slightly bland family five-door the car had become by the time of the third generation model's launch in 2006. Toyota couldn't turn the clock right back with this MK4 model but it was determined to inject this fourth generation design with a little more styling and driving sharpness, the things, after all, that people most liked about the original. With these things sorted, so the reasoning went, this car would be as appealing to Qashqai-like crossover folk as it would be to those considering more traditional soft roading compact 4x4 rivals like Honda's CR-V or Land Rover's Freelander. So, does it all stack up? And will it all be enough to bring the RAV4 back to its previous position, front and centre in its market. Let's find out at the wheel of the prime pick in the line-up, the 2.2-litre AWD diesel model.

Driving Experience

Whichever RAV4 model you choose, Toyota claims that you'll get a car with a more rigid body, re-tuned suspension and revised electric power steering. But it's really only the 2.2-litre AWD diesel models that properly show this off. Why? Well, it all comes down to the fact that, on this variant, the 4WD system can now be integrally used in enhancing a more dynamic driving experience - in essence, it potentially can make this car eager and fun again in the way it once was - and that's a big change. Let me explain. Like most so-called '4x4' cars of this kind, all-wheel drive versions of this Toyota actually run nearly all of their lives with 100% of the power going to the front wheels. Only when there's a loss of traction does any kind of drive head rearwards. Or in a particularly sticky situation, the driver can force 50% of the drive to go rearwards by pressing a dash-mounted 'lock' button. It's all very sensible. But if you're looking for something that'll bring you any kind of spirited drive, all pretty dull. Which is why this car's rather hidden away 'Sport' button is so important, offering as it does a third driving option as part of the Integrated Dynamic Drive System - one that really ought to transform the way this car feels. Select 'Sport' and from the moment you push this RAV into a bend and turn the steering wheel, at least 10% of the drive is pushed rearwards, even on a completely dry and grippy surface. At the same time, steering and throttle response will be sharper, as will the gearshift change points if you've specified auto transmission. It's all enough to elevate this Toyota towards the kind of driving experience that you'd get from more dynamically able soft roaders like Ford's Kuga and Mazda's CX-5 - and even onto a par with some of the better crossover models.

Design and Build

Seen in profile, this car still manages to look compact and wieldy, displaying the same kind of space-efficient packaging, rising belt line and distinctive silhouette that previous owners will instantly recognise. Only when you move to the front are major changes apparent, with Toyota's current 'keen look' design language liberally applied across the pointy end. That's brought us this large, trapezoidal lower grille design, matched by a smaller upper grille that runs the full width between sharp-edged headlamps teamed with integral daytime running lights. The marketplace may or may not like these aesthetic changes but I can't imagine too many potential buyers objecting to the improvements that have gone on here in the cabin, a place with a more stylised feel boasting far better levels of perceived quality. Get in and the first thing you notice is this curving, metal-finished spar, a hoop that rises from the transmission tunnel and cuts through the dashboard beams to frame steering wheel, footwell and an instrument binnacle that illuminates with clear blue backlighting. And in the rear? An extra 100mm has been added to the wheelbase of this MK4 model and pretty much all of it has been used to benefit back seat occupants who now get an extra 40mm of kneeroom and class-leading standards of space from seats that can be independently reclined each side of the 60/40 split-folding divide. And bootspace? Well before we get to that, it's worth pointing out that there's been a big change to the way you access it. Gone at last is the side-hinged 'fridge-door'-style tailgate arrangement of past RAV4's, to be replaced by a top-hinged tailgate that'll be less distinctive but far more user-friendly in tight supermarket carparks. Open it and a bigger 547-litre loadbay beckons.

Market and Model

Pricing for this 2.2-litre AWD RAV4 model starts from around £26,500 - so a £2,200 premium over the front wheel drive 2.0-litre D-4D model. As for equipment, well the tally does run to alloy wheels, front foglamps, LED daytime running lights, rear privacy glass, air conditioning, Bluetooth 'phone compatibility, a decent quality stereo system with Aux-in and USB points and Hill-start Assist Control to stop you from drifting backwards on uphill junctions. There are also niceties like a powered tailgate, power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, sports front seats and a 'Toyota Touch' infotainment system you can affordably upgrade to sat nav-inclusive 'Touch & Go' status. As for safety, well all the basics are in place to justify a five star Euro NCAP rating - in other words twin front, side and cutain airbags, plus a driver's knee 'bag, anti-whiplash front seats, ISOFIX childseat fastenings and all the usual electronic assistance for braking, traction and stability control. The AWD models feature Toyota's VSC+ system as standard, which integrates the stability control with the electric power steering. And on top spec models, there's the option of a Blind Spot Monitor to stop you from dangerously pulling out to overtake when there's a vehicle in your blind spot.

Cost of Ownership

The AWD 2.2-litre D-4D diesel RAV4 variant manages 49.6mpg on the combined cycle and puts out 149g/km of CO2. A comparable Mazda CX-5 does better while an equivalent Land Rover Freelander does much worse. But all the other obvious alternatives - comparable versions of the Honda CR-V, Ford Kuga and Volkswagen Tiguan - are pretty much on a par with this Toyota. What else? Well for the sake of completeness, I'll tell you that the returns of the sole petrol-powered RAV4, the 2.0-litre CVT automatic version, see it return 39.2mpg on the combined cycle and 167g/km - which is better than a comparable petrol automatic Honda CR-V. Insurance is group 29. And there's the usual comprehensive five years of Toyota warranty in the unlikely event that anything should go wrong.
