Volkswagen lifts lid on its latest era-defining Passat

The all-new Passat has had its official unveiling at Volkswagen's Design Centre in Potsdam, Germany.

First launched in 1973, the model has gone on to enjoy huge critical and commercial success, with this latest edition deemed to be one of the best to have ever come off the production line.

The German car manufacturer explained that what sets this era-defining Passat apart from its predecessors is the simple fact that every aspect of it is brand new.

While paying homage to the history of the model – it is instantly recognisable – Volkswagen has gone all out with this car, across both the saloon and estate models.

The designers have streamlined the saloon version of the vehicle tremendously – the weight has been cut by 85kg, fuel economy is up by 20 per cent and its length has been snipped by two millimetres.

As for the interior, the sophisticated nature of the car owes its heritage to the eight-generation Passat, except this version is more technologically superior.

New features include Active Info Display, which comes with a fully configurable interactive 12.3-inch TFT display; the latest Modular Infotainment System, including the Car-Net remote app; and a "further-developed" 360-degree Area View function.

"A highlight of the Passat’s new range of engines is a high-performance, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, bi-turbo diesel delivering 240 PS and an extraordinary 500 Nm from 1,750 rpm," Volkswagen stated.

"This engine will be available only with a new seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid model will also be offered, with potential to travel 31 miles on battery power alone, and with a maximum range of around 600 miles."
