Volkswagen Classic ready to tackle classic car rally

The "Le Jog" event from Land's End to John O'Groats is one of the most challenging races in rally driving, and the route is set to be tackled by a rather unusual model.

A two-person team comprising Steffi Edelhoff and Sandra Wukovich will be navigating the team in a Volkswagen Iltis - one of the vehicles in the manufacturer's classic collection.

The rally, which requires drivers to tackle a gruelling 2,400km track in just three days, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and will set off from Land's End on December 7th.

It will mark the first time a car from the VW Classic collection has been involved among the 66 racing models, with the "Paris-Dakar" version of the Iltis - similar to the car that completed the famous desert rally in first place in 1980 - is the vehicle the Edelhoff/Wukovich pairing will be driving.

The partnership, who have already competed worldwide in a Volkswagen Amarok, will be negotiating Le Jog in the name of charity. Both will be supporting “be your own hero e.V.”, a registered non-profit organisation that campaigns for the autonomy and self-reliance of girls and young women.

Both drivers will have to travel over bumpy roads, streams, dark night roads and other tough terrains during the event. The four-wheel drive Iltis is therefore more than suited to tackle this event.

Unlike the production version, which saw 10,000 of the models released, the car has a reinforced chassis, underbody protection, a front safety guard, auxiliary lamps, roll-over protection bar, only two sports bucket seats as well as a big 90-litre fuel tank.
