Volkswagen Beetle Dune concept set for Detroit debut

The latest Volkswagen design is soon to be wheeled out to greet expectant fans and motoring experts at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Despite the horrendously cold weather currently gripping the continent, the new design is expected to be a ray of sunshine at the event.

The Beetle Dune is a rather interesting version of the brand's iconic model, maintaining the same basic body shape but with a lower body height and higher distance from the ground - giving it more attitude and a rugged, off-road look.

Larger wheels, measuring at 19-inches, gives the car an all-terrain image, while a rear-mounted ski-rack is perfect for tackling the slopes - with the feature rather appropriate for the freezing Michigan temperatures.

It builds on an idea last seen in the year 2000, when the first Beetle Dune was unveiled in Los Angeles. While that version didn't hit full production, it is fully expected that the latest incarnation will.
