Introducing The All New Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake
Volkswagen has revealed the all-new Arteon Shooting Brake, alongside a facelifted version of the executive fastback – with both models gaining new plug-in hybrid and range-topping 316bhp R variants.
The Volkswagen Arteon was originally launched in 2017, but so far has only been offered with a Fastback body style.
The new Arteon Shooting Brake variant features a separate design; the Shooting Brake’s higher back, extended roofline, prominent haunches over the rear wheels and an angled tailgate, set it apart from the Fastback.
Volkswagen have revealed that the Shooting Brake will offer 565 litres of boot space (slightly more than the Fastback) and 1632 litres with the seats folded.
As well as the all-new Arteon Shooting Brake, Volkswagen have revealed R versions will be arriving too, as part of their continued range expansion of the brand’s R performance division.
The R variants will use the fourth evolution of the brands's 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing 316bhp. They will also include a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and an updated version of the 4Motion four-wheel-drive system.
The new Arteon eHybrid, to be available in both Shooting Brake and Fastback body styles, will use the same powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Passat GTE: a 154bhp, 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine a 113bhp electric motor.
The two units will have a combined output of 215bhp, which is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox! The new Arteon eHybrid will offer an all-electric range of 33 miles and will be able to operate in zero-emissions mode at speeds of up to 87mph.
The restyled Arteon will see a host of design changes, including a new grille with a light band, revised LED headlights and a range of new alloy wheel designs, ranging in diameter from 18-inch to 20-inch.
There will be four different styles: basic, Elegance, R-Line and R.
The performance models feature typical R styling cues, including a beefed-up front bumper with large cooling ducts, blue-painted brake callipers, chrome exhaust pipes and 20-inch performance alloys.
Inside, there’s to be a redesigned dashboard with a new upper section, a standard 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a new multifunction steering wheel and Volkswagen's latest infotainment system, with a standard 8.0-inch or optional 9.2-inch touchscreen.
Martin Hube, Volkswagen’s spokesman for the Arteon model line, revealed: ‘We listened to feedback from our Arteon customers to further improve the Arteon family, not only adding a new derivative but also giving it a completely new and very sophisticated interior, which is very premium in terms of material.
‘It has, basically, a Touareg interior.’
Equipment levels will vary according to trim, but Volkswagen have stated that the Arteon’s standard kit includes a new multifunction steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, illuminated trim panels and digital air conditioning controls.
Arteon R models will include black carbon trim elements, leather-upholstered sports seats with integrated headrests, and an additional Race driving mode for drivers to enjoy.
The Arteon’s mid-range Elegance and R-Line cars will feature stainless-steel footrests, a sports steering wheel and velour/leather seats.

The all-new Volkswagen Arteon range will officially launch early next year, with orders being taken from this Autumn onwards. Some variants may take longer to come to market than others.
Prices have yet to be revealed, but it is likely that the facelifted Arteon will command a slight premium over the current model.
